Touchpad kindling

Fire sale. Touchpad. Kindle.

You can now pick up TouchPads ridiculously cheaply. Unfortunately, if you’re in the UK, there isn’t yet a Kindle app available, so the claim of “TouchPad: cheaper than a kindle, includes a kindle” is not yet true.

Earlier today, Tom shared a trick to get the Kindle app on UK TouchPads. With the crazy fire sale discounting that’s going on at the moment, this raises the possibility of getting a fully-functional tablet with the kindle app for less than the cost of a Kindle. What’s not to like?

Unfortunately, the trick no longer works – or not entirely. There is a workaround for the more technical amongst you. If you don’t have the SDK installed, you should wait until the official Kindle app comes out, later this month.

If you have the WebOS SDK installed, you can reset your TouchPad, when you go through first run create an alternate profile and tell it you’re in the USA, when it reboots you can install Kindle from the US app catalog, and then you can use novaterm to copy the app install to the USB drive, then palm-package, then reset your TouchPad back to UK with your normal profile and palm-install the app. I’m not going to be more specific than that and don’t condone it (but then I also don’t condone excessive geographical restrictions), but it works.

You should then see the kindle app on your TouchPad. Happy reading.
